The Mississippi Gulf Coast Sustainable Communities Initiative is developing a plan to help areas affected by Hurricane Katrina to rebuild prosperous and sustainable local economies through the Gulf Plan for Opportunity. The Plan needed a website that would invite citizens to interact with plan staff both online and in person at meetings held in several cities and towns throughout the Gulf Coast area of Mississippi.
To facilitate that interaction, the site offers easy-to-read information about the Plan presented in bite size chunks. Announcements and updates are made through a blog. And the site encourages citizen interaction through mini-polls and a full survey to gather local opinion on key issues.
As a result, citizen participation in the planning process is up and Plan staff report that they feel more informed about what people in their communities want.
